Initially, the purpose of installing cameras in many people’s homes was to protect themselves and their families. But as technology becomes more and more sophisticated, that very safety tool now becomes an unexpected danger.
The ‘products’ obtained from home surveillance cameras are not of high quality, but the number is still rampant and constantly increasing in the past few years on the dark web. Almost all of them are sensitive content. This even leads to the formation of more specialized groups, simply because more people like it.
Because of the increasing demand for viewers, the number of videos stolen from surveillance cameras is increasing, many people have defied everything to take advantage of this problem to benefit themselves. Nowadays, it is not too difficult for us to find videos that are hacked from the camera. Videos that are offered for sale in “full versions” on social media groups, even on platforms that publicly release 18+ content, have long been popular.
In 2019, the Vietnamese online community was shocked by the fact that the surveillance camera in the singer VMH’s house was hacked by hackers, and released sensitive videos a few years earlier. Insiders are surprised, public opinion is angry, but the bad guys are absorbed in enjoying the benefits they get. It is with celebrities, there are certainly many cases that have been and are becoming victims of this problem.
Even when falling into the sights, being hacked into the system, even the victim himself is very passive. With only not-so-sophisticated tricks, bad guys were able to break in and steal the content they wanted.
According to sharing from ‘skilled’ people, there are two simplest ways to hack the camera, the first is to attack directly by scanning the camera’s IP and port. Then the hacker will find a way to break into the system. This is a common attack because most users use the default password of the provider like 1234, 1111, 1212…
The other way, the hacker will install a spy software on the CCTV camera to create a botnet used in a famous form of attack that is DDOS.
As soon as the theft is successful, but this content quickly becomes a product, the hacker gangs become expensive merchants. Many 100% real videos are touted on groups, websites, they are even used as a means to reverse threats against the victim.
“Technological crime” is increasing day by day, no matter when, wherever, the safety and privacy of yourself and your family can be threatened. Wanting to protect themselves but causing harm to people, making many people not know how to handle it properly. Imagine one day you are surfing the web, and suddenly come across your own image on a black address, then can you still be calm?
The simplest way to fight this crime is to say no to similar content being distributed. Besides, to protect yourself, find the best, most secure products, and are guided by trusted experts. Raising your awareness about the knowledge related to home camera systems is also a good thing to do.
